The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced the payment schedule for the first quarter of 2024, generating excitement for a potential increase in the R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant. This grant, administered by the Department of Social Development, has been a vital support system for millions of eligible South Africans, refugees, and asylum seekers since its introduction in May 2020. With the recent commencement of SASSA payment dates for February, there are reports indicating a possible ZAR 64 increase to the SRD grant starting in April of this year.

SASSA SRD Grant Increase From April 2024

As we near the anticipated February payment schedule, there is a noticeable sense of excitement surrounding the possibility of a significant increase in the SRD grant come April. SASSA is generating high expectations among SRD grant beneficiaries by exploring a substantial rise in the grant amount, raising it from R350 to R413, a noteworthy increase of R63.

We are pleased to announce that nearly 8.5 million recipients nationwide, including a significant number of South Africans, refugees, and asylum seekers, rely on the SASSA monthly social relief grant benefits.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile made an official announcement on the GovernmentZA social media platform, X, regarding the current R350 SRD grant. In his statement, he acknowledged that the grant is not keeping pace with inflation and revealed plans for a review later this year.

Based on our documentation regarding the recent announcement of SASSA extending the R350 grant until 2025, we are confident that the social relief of distress SRD R350 grant will see a substantial increase to R413, in line with the current inflationary trends as stated by Deputy President Paul Mashatile.

The question now is whether this adjustment will be enough to address the rising inflation in the country. At the very least, vulnerable citizens will stand to benefit from it. With an upcoming increase in the SRD, focus naturally shifts to other grants. Will SASSA have plans to increase social grants in the months ahead in 2024?
