SASSA SRD Grant Extended to March 2025

The SRD grant, which began in May 2020, has been instrumental in alleviating financial struggles for individuals experiencing economic hardships in the country. Initially planned to end in March 2024, the deadline has been extended to March 2025 in response to the significant measures outlined in the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS). These measures address critical issues within the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA). The MTBPS highlighted the importance of the SRD grant in offering essential aid to vulnerable South Africans who lack other sources of income.

SASSA has made significant progress this year, including the continued support for the R350 grant and the blocking of 74,000 deceased fraud accounts. The extension of the SRD grant until 2025 demonstrates the government’s commitment to addressing economic challenges and sustaining this important social relief initiative. Additionally, the decision to increase the SASSA SRD grant amount to R350 starting in April, with an additional R34 billion in funding allocated to SASSA, emphasizes the government’s dedication to providing essential support to beneficiaries.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana delivered important updates during his presentation of the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement. One significant announcement was the extension of the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, now expected to continue until March 2025. Minister Godongwana also emphasized the government’s thorough review of SASSA grants, with input from the National Treasury playing a key role in this process.

Additionally, Minister Godongwana highlighted South Africa’s significant social protection expenditure program, emphasizing its status as one of the largest among developing countries in relation to GDP. Over the 2024 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) period, an impressive 61% of consolidated non-interest spending will be allocated to social wages.

A significant portion of the R945.9 billion allocation is designated for social protection transfers, including essential grants such as the child support grant, disability grant, old age grant, and the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress SRD grant. It appears that various SASSA social grants may soon see an increase, similar to the expected rise in the SRD grant.

Enoch Godongwana Prospect SASSA SRD Grant Will Be Made Permanent for Vulnerable Citizens

Minister Enoch Godongwana is discussing the possibility of making the SASSA SRD Grant permanent in order to address concerns for vulnerable citizens during a time of rising inflation. He believes that the grant has the potential to be a long-term solution and anticipates a significant increase in beneficiaries due to SASSA online applications. Projections show that the number of beneficiaries could rise from 27.3 million in 2023/24 to 40.4 million in 2040/41, which would constitute 3.8% of GDP in 2040/41.

Godongwana confirms that the government is in the final stages of a social grants review and has allocated R34 billion to extend the R350 grant. This commitment is a significant victory for SRD grant recipients, providing crucial support for those living below the poverty threshold during these challenging times.
